In order to replace your CPU heatsink fan you need to follow a few simple directions, which are listed in this order.
- Unplug the computer from any and all power
- unplug the keyboard
- unplug the mouse
- unplug the monitor
- You must be grounded - In order to ensure that you are grounded, touch the computer case before working. If you are not grounded you could have an electrically charge that you might get when you walk across carpet and then touch something metal. You may not even feel the shock, but you could be sending thousands of volts into your computer.
- Purchase either Thermal Grease or a Thermal Pad, which ever your computer needs. If not specified use thermal grease.
- Remove the old CUP heatsink fan – If you notice, you have thermal grease instead of a thermal pad you can remove it easily and then go to the next step.
- Place the processor on a pad with pins up
- Clean processor with cotton balls and rubbing alcohol
- Place the processor back into your computer
- Apply the thermal grease
- place the heatsink fan on top of the processor
- Connect the fan to the motherboard
- plug in the keyboard
- plug in the mouse
- plug in the monitor
- plug in the power
Even with these easy instructions, you should read the instructions that came with your CPU heatsink fan before installation.
